Where To Buy (Cool) Affordable Art Online

A great piece of art can make or break a room - but a question I get constantly is where to find cool, affordable art? Art is incredibly important in my designs - it's not only a way to tie a room together but is often the aesthetic jumping off point - if I find an amazing piece of art it can be the element that we build an entire concept from!

While I think its tricky to define art as good or bad - art is so subjective - I do have a few tips when buying art online:

  1. Avoid unframed wrapped canvas prints - while the idea of "canvas" may feel alluring its far from the real deal and ends up just looking super cheap.

  2. Steer clear of mass-produced, generic prints of famous works - we're talking the heavy hitters - Mona Lisa, Starry Night - there’s just something extra cringe about a print of an obvious masterpiece! An alternative could be finding an interesting vintage piece at a flea market in a similar style to the work you love - or maybe a vintage poster of a gallery opening for the artist!

  3. The same goes for mass-produced photography - beach prints from Amazon are a no-go for me. As you'll see in my round-up of vendors below, there are so many sites where you can source similar prints directly from artists that feel a bit more elevated and less generic.

  4. Bad or cheesy typography - you know what I'm talking about here - bonus points for quotes ("Home is where the heart is") and extra bonus points if it’s painted on distressed wood! Sorry, not sorry!

Lucky for us, there are an abundance of online retailers who partner directly with artists to sell more affordable print runs of their work. I'm also a huge fan of vintage - hit up your local flea markets and thrift stores - and if you don't have any in your area, Etsy and Chairish are both amazing resources! Sharing some of my favorite online vendors below to help you find some special pieces to put in your own home. Happy hunting!
